For over 500 years, the Rosary has served as a visible Catholic symbol of devotion in honor of the Virgin Mary. The word "Rosary" comes from the Latin meaning a "crown or garland of roses." Each Hail Mary symbolizes the gift of a rose to our Lady. While saying the Rosary, we join with Mary in our prayers to the Father. Mother Mary has promised us, "You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the Rosary." The Rosary engages us in blessed prayer both vocal, saying Our Fathers and Hail Marys, and mental, reflecting on the mysteries of the life of Christ and His Mother. The Rosary is divided into five decades representing an event in Christ's life. There are four sets of "Mysteries of the Rosary": Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious. As Pope John Paul II has reminded us, "We need to return to the practice of family prayer and prayer for families." The Rosary presents a wonderful opportunity to follow the Pope's guidance. To learn more about the benefits of reciting the Rosary, you may wish to visit the Rosary Center, Virtual Rosary, The Holy Rosary. |
